The Challenge/Problem:
The organ transplant sector in hospitals faces significant inefficiencies in managing and updating patient test data. This leads to nurses spending excessive time on administrative tasks instead of direct patient care, and critically, patients risk losing their place on the transplant queue due to overlooked or forgotten test renewals. Communication challenges further complicate the process, especially for vulnerable patients with limited access to reliable contact methods.
The Solution/Outcome
Designed and prototyped "Alerta Saúde," an intuitive platform for controlling and monitoring organ transplant patient data. This solution simplifies test updates, provides immediate alerts for overdue tests, and offers improved communication channels, aiming to reduce human error, optimize nursing workflows, and ultimately increase the number of patients successfully receiving organ transplants
Research
Through interviews with nurses and transplant patients, I uncovered deep systemic issues:
Nurses spent excessive time checking test statuses manually
Patients often missed test renewals due to poor communication or outdated contact info
The SNT system lacked urgency indicators and created friction in accessing basic data
Using the 5 Whys technique and workflow analysis, I traced the root problem to system inefficiency, poor communication loops, and high nurse workload.
Persona
Maria, 55, transplant nurse in Recife, needed a fast, accurate way to monitor patient status, avoid oversights, and ensure patients stayed eligible for organ matching — all while juggling heavy responsibilities.
